The first Lough Currane Flyfishing Championship was fished on Saturday 16 Aug. The Competition was on a catch and release basis and a most enjoyable day was had by all. The lake rose by over six inches on the day of the championship but this did not deter John Holstead from taking five fish. The proud winner was presented with a 19ft Davison Corrib Boat and a unique photograpic print of a spawning sea trout courtesy of Vincent Hyland. The largest fish was 52cm and taken by well known local ghillie Frank Donnelly. Alan Hassett was second with three sea trout. The Championship Dinner was held in the Butler Arms Hotel and its historic association with angling in Waterville has truly been revitalised. A great night was had by all and it is hoped to run the Championship on an annual basis.

The weather was warm over a number of days and the sea trout responded with Rod Robinson and Kevin O Sullivan taking twelve sea trout to 4lbs in Na Mona, Paul Asque with Neil O Shea took two nice sea trout of 2.5lbs and 3lbs on Currane. One grilse fell to Paddy Barrett with Brod O Sullivan. Donie and Denis Collins with nine sea trout to 5.75lbs . Brendan O Halloran with seven sea trout to 2.5lbs while Graham and Stuart Liptrot had a grilse of 4lbs and a sea trout of 2.5lbs. Other anglers reported reasonable catches. The Butler Pool produced some grilse. Weather as I write this report is like winter today with hail and cold winds dominating. The month ended with a great sea trout of over 9.5lbs falling to Roy Williams from Kent.
There appears to be a good stock of sea trout but grilse are scarce and this may be associated with the smolt run of 2007, we had a drought from Mar to the end of June with very high air temperature, this may have impeded the smolt run.
