August was a month of extreme weather and extreme water levels with Currane at or above winter level for the entire month. Another facet of the weather was the low temperatures throughout the month. Grilse were still scarce and sea trout only responded when warm conditions prevailed on a number of days. The first days of the month saw Martin Lanigan O Keefe, Frank Donnelly and Mike Dwyer all take salmon and grilse. The first week saw Brendan Spillane report good fishing for his holiday with a dozen fish over 2lbs and plenty of juniors around the 3/4 pound mark and fresh. John Young took two nice sea trout with the best at over 7lbs. Geoffrey Thompson had a grilse with Frank Donnelly while Brendan O Halloran had a good number of fresh juniors and two better trout to 2lbs. John Curnew also had a grilse.Grilse were taken in the Butler Pool each day but the main run, in common with the rest of the country has not arrived. Some good bags over the first days of week two saw Brendan Spillane taking eight sea trout while Joe Barry had five sea trout while a grilse was taken by Tom Ahern.

The trout started to take around the 8th of August with Rene Lachemeier taking twenty and Steve Cullen taking four trout to 4lbs. Kevin O Sullivan took some nice juniors in the evenings with Derry Gibson also successful with four nice trout in an evening session. Tom Sheehan and Maura Harrington took a grilse and two sea trout with Neil O Shea while a guest with Dominic Mc Gillicudy had a number of sea trout and a grilse of 6lbs on the fly. The first Lough Currane Flyfishing Championship was fished on Saturday 16 Aug. The Competition was on a catch and release basis and a most enjoyable day was had by all. The lake rose by over six inches on the day of the championship but this did not deter John Holstead from taking five fish. The proud winner was presented with a 19ft Davison Corrib Boat and a unique photograpic print of a spawning sea trout courtesy of Vincent Hyland. The largest fish was 52cm and taken by well known local ghillie Frank Donnelly. Alan Hassett was second with three sea trout. The Championship Dinner was held in the Butler Arms Hotel and its historic association with angling in Waterville has truly been revitalised. A great night was had by all and it is hoped to run the Championship on an annual basis.

The third week of the month saw grilse fall to Martin Lanigan O Keefe , seatrout to Jim Sayers and Gerard Meade who shared five trout with the largest at 7lbs which was returned, John Allen had two sea trout and two grilse on fly with Bob Priestly while Peter Kiernan had three sea trout to 2lbs on Cloonaughlin., Robin Waistell taking five with Tom O Shea with three of these over 2lbs, Mike Taylor took a nice trout of 5.5lbs while Jamie Glyden, Will Glyden and Jake Burke took sea trout with Neil O Shea. At last salmon and grilse were showing in reasonable numbers with The Prince and Vincent O Sullivan taking three on fly at 10,5,4lbs in one day, Diarmuid Lenihan ,grilse at 4.5lbs and John Eagan and Mick Lambe taking three grilse with Michael O Sullivan. Sea Trout were also to the fore with fish being taken by most boats with some good trout being taken most notably two of 4lbs by a guest with Terence Wharton.

The fourth week saw young John Mackintosh take three nice sea trout with Neil O Shea, the best at 4.5lbs. Two good fresh grilse were taken by young Michael Mc Carthy fishing with his grandfather Donal O Shea and another lost, they reported seeing a number of fresh salmon. Liam Ellis reported good fishing for juniors in the evenings A number of salmon were taken on the Cummeragh during this period with Kevin Brain sucessful. Ally Gowan with Dominic Mc Gillicudy took a nice grilse on fly.
The weather was warm over a number of days and the sea trout responded with Rod Robinson and Kevin O Sullivan taking twelve sea trout to 4lbs in Na Mona, Paul Asque with Neil O Shea took two nice sea trout of 2.5lbs and 3lbs on Currane. One grilse fell to Paddy Barrett with Brod O Sullivan. Donie and Denis Collins with nine sea trout to 5.75lbs . Brendan O Halloran with seven sea trout to 2.5lbs while Graham and Stuart Liptrot had a grilse of 4lbs and a sea trout of 2.5lbs. Other anglers reported reasonable catches. The Butler Pool produced some grilse. Weather as I write this report is like winter today with hail and cold winds dominating. The month ended with a great sea trout of over 9.5lbs falling to Roy Williams from Kent.

There appears to be a good stock of sea trout but grilse are scarce and this may be associated with the smolt run of 2007, we had a drought from Mar to the end of June with very high air temperature, this may have impeded the smolt run.
