22 Oct: I have been away in UK fishing for a number of days. We also visited Kielder Hatchery to look at their methods. The water in Currane has dropped and some spawning is evident. Water and air temp will have to drop before the spawning really starts. There are still tickets for the draw available. Our AGM is on at 8pm on Saturday in Lobster Bar.

Notice of AGM: AGM will take place in Lobster Bar at 8pm on Saturday 28 Oct 06.

The final count on the Butler Pool was 214 salmon of which a significant number were released. Water has dropped but more rain is forecast tomorrow.

2 Oct: Weather more like summer today, we are busily cleaning spawning streams over the next number of weeks. They are in good condition following the rain in Sept.

The month of Sept will be remembered for the amount of rain and wind which hit Kerry , we had exceptionally high water and the fishing improved dramatically with exceptional catches of fresh trout , most of these trout were in the one pound range and it was in all probability the result of our improvements to the spawning streams over the last number of years. The catches to some boats were exceptional on many days during the month. The salmon situation was encouraging with the Butler Pool producing fish every day during the month and all on fly. The Inny also produced good salmon fishing so there appears to be a healthy spawning stock in this area of Kerry.
The first week of the month produced excellent results with the following notable catches, Mike Dwyer and Colin James had two grilse, Terence Wharton and Tom O Shea had four grilse on the Inny , four superb trout fell to John Holstead at 5.5,6,6.5, 7.75lbs, Bob Priestly had five trout to 4lbs. The first rain fell early in the week and salmon were taken by Ken Towner, Ciaran Earley, Vincent O Sullivan, Martin Lanigan O Keefee, Donal O Shea and Tom O Shea.

The second week saw many salmon and grilse fall to Mike O’Dwyer ,Mr Colin James, Martin Lanigan O Keefe, Ciaran Early, Tom O Shea and other guests on the Butler Pool. The Pool having undergone improvements has really come into its own.

The main lake began to fish well with the bonus of a lot of fresh trout running, Mr Joe Schleg of West Palm beach Florida caught four good Sea Trout 3lbs, 3.5lbs, 4lbs, 7lbs all caught on Claret Bumbles with Roger Baker and all were released. Grilse were also a feature of catches on Currane with Bob Priestly, Brod O Sullivan ,Simon Chislett, Ken Towner with Vincent O Sullivan taking a number of grilse.

The seatrout were on the move with the upper lakes producing nice fish to 4lbs and fresh trout were much in evidence. Lough Currane saw catches up to double figures in sea trout with some boats recording in excess of 10 trout. Dara Treacy recorded over twenty sea trout all returned while Tom Connolly and his friend Jack took four nice trout on Cloonaughlin.

The third week started well with huge amounts of rain and salmon and seatrout obliged with Vincent O Sullivan and Alan Foster taking six trout while Bob Priestly had a fine trout of over 3lbs. The Butler Pool produced more salmon with Mr Purcell taking one while Liam Ellis had a lovely sea liced salmon of 7lbs. Torrential rain and swirling winds made life difficult on Currane. Despite the conditions some good bags were recorded with the best going to Robert Mull and his friend Carlos fishing with Tom O Shea,11 trout to 1.75lbs, Kevin O Sullivan four trout to 5lbs, guests with Neil O Shea and Dominic Mc Gillicudy two grilse. One superb bag fell to Alan Foster with Vincent O Sullivan, 15 seatrout. Liam Ellis had three seatrout while grilse fell to a guest with Junior Scully and one to Martin Lanigan O Keefe. Anthony O Sullivan with nine seatrout and Kevin O Sullivan, twelve trout while Denis and Donie O Sullivan had nine also to 1.75lbs. Ted Sivyer and his father had 11 seatrout to 1.5lbs. Storm force winds around the 19th saw fishing at a virtual standstill with only a handful of boats out. Tommy Duggan with Dominic Mc Gillicudy had six trout and a number of boats had small bags of seatrout, John Boyjter, five trout, Alan Tweedale, four trout, Bryn Evans three trout and Mr. Town six trout.

Possibly the biggest flood in recent years hit the area on the 20th with Currane rising over nine inches in the afternoon. Boats who braved the elements saw reasonable numbers of trout and salmon landed, Vincent O Sullivan and guest had eight seatrout, Steve Bullock with John Murphy had five seatrout, guests with Vincent Appelby had four seatrout while Tim Murphy with Neil O Shea had two grilse and a number of seatrout. Diarmuid Williams landed a fresh grilse in the Butler Pool. This fresh water really got things going with fresh salmon and seatrout much in evidence. Ted Sivyer and his father had two salmon on the Inny while Peter Milne and Nico Winandy with Vincent Appelby had two salmon. Trout obliged on Currane with the best bags falling to a guest with Vincent O Sullivan nine trout while Henry Benders with Terence Wharton had twelve trout, Brod O Sullivan and his guests David O Meara and Mr. Ryan had 16 trout and two grilse.
Some excellent fishing was experienced during the last week of the month with the Lynham party fishing with Mike Dwyer taking eighteen seatrout and four salmon, the vast majority returned, Dominic Mc Gillicudy and his guests had nine trout while other boats did well also with good bags taken. It is a tribute to all anglers that the vast majority of seatrout and salmon are being returned. Jeremy Burke and Mattew Simmons fishing with Michael O Sullivan, thirty three seatrout and one salmon over two days, John Curnew had 7 seatrout of which one trout weighed over 6lbs, Wayne Maloney had fourteen trout while Ian Binnian had twelve seatrout. Alan Foster with Vincent O Sullivan had twenty seatrout, two Luxemburg visitors with John Murphy took nine while Toby Mushler and Dave O Neill took twenty one seatrout. Albert Wagener and Nico Winandy had four salmon on the Inny fishing with Vincent Appelby, all sportingly released. Two guests from Luxenburg shared four salmon on the Butler Pool while Mr Roden had a salmon of 8lbs on the Inny, John Quinlan and his guests had four salmon over the last number of days.

Kevin Mc Gillicudy with Mike Dwyer had eight salmon , the majority returned on the Butler Pool. , Simon Coombs with Vincent Appelby had six salmon on the Inny, Michael Roden also took five salmon during the week. The last number of days of the season produced excellent salmon fishing on the Inny with Michael Roden, Junior Scully, Dave O Neill, Gerry Fitzpatrick and Toby Mushler all taking salmon, the lakes were less obliging but there were some good bags of sea trout including fifteen seatrout to Brian Harris and John Allen and a salmon fell to Simon Perks. The Butler Pool again produced good fishing with Mike Dwyer and Kevin Mc Gillicudy taking fish. The season is now closed and we await with anticipation the spawning season. With the amount of seatrout in the one pound range we should experience a substantial run of maiden seatrout in April / May next season so all we need is a good Irish summer with rain and wind.
